Recently I listened to Simple and clean and a flood of nostalgia and feels swept over me.

NO I AGREE it’s a really good narrative but when it comes with the weight of real oppression it’s. well i live that enough without having to read about it too.

YES PRECISELY it’s like fighting Xehanort PLUS the entire actual world takes a lot more energy which I often don’t have or am not willing to expend.

BBS is also really good in that Aqua’s story is also easy to enjoy in a gendered-narrative sense, wow. So good.

Insights about my narrative tastes had while showering:

Okay, so I really enjoy Terra’s story in BBS. This should not be news to any of you, since I am not subtle about my tragic precious dumb trusting baby emotions. I am whatever the opposite of subtle is. Overt doesn’t seem strong enough.

But! It occurred to me that aspects of Terra’s story I love to explore and play with and repeat in AUs - vulnerability, helplessness, self-loathing, isolation - are aspects that, in a lot of other stories I encounter, I really hate and will spend eons attempting to write the characters away from - not that I don’t also spend eons trying to write Terra away from those aspects, but I enjoy the journey, with Terra, while in these other stories I just want to get to somewhere tolerable already, trudge trudge narrative trudge.

Then I went: oh, DUH.

All those other stories are about women.

And the thing is, the critical thing, is that when it’s Terra’s story it’s just one story. When it’s a woman’s story it’s the only story we ever get. The story about women being told that there’s something Wrong with them that must always be suppressed and manipulated by people they trust and stripped of control over their own bodies? I’ve seen that story. I’ve seen that story a lot, and sometimes it’s nonfiction, and sometimes it’s not the story someone intended to tell, and sometimes it’s more or less justified within the context of the story. But it’s always there, and when I encounter a story of female helplessness and vulnerability every single story is weighing down on me, and I want a different story for us, for a change. Any other story will do.

But when it’s a man’s story it is a change. It stands on its own, without millennia of this is all you get, without cultural associations of female weakness and lack of value.

It’s much lighter.

And I can admire the workmanship much more readily if I’m not busy being crushed by the weight.

(Also, there is one male artist on here, but “boy in the boat” is the best euphemism for the clit and kaboodle that I’ve heard in a while, and any song that blames WWI for lesbianism because all these women were left by themselves needs to be included.)
